The Bell Tower of the Basilica of San Nicolò: Lecco's Sentinel between Sky and Lake
Among the most recognisable symbols of the city of Lecco, the bell tower of the Basilica of San Nicolò dominates the urban skyline with its slender elegance. It can be seen from afar, from the coastal road, from the mountains, from boats navigating the lake. It is not just an architectural work, but a visual and spiritual reference, a constant presence that links the city's past to its present.
With its 96 metres high, it is one of the tallest bell towers in Italy. Its octagonal Neo-Gothic structure soars above the city like a symbolic lighthouse, marking the historic centre and religious heart of Lecco. Its sharp, harmonious silhouette blends perfectly into the landscape where lake and mountain merge, in a continuous dialogue between nature and architecture.
The history of the bell tower is relatively recent compared to the long spiritual tradition of the basilica that houses it. The Basilica of San Nicolò, named after the patron saint of sailors, is in fact a sacred building with medieval origins, but it was renovated and expanded during the 19th century. Only at the beginning of the 20th century was there a need to add a bell tower that would be in keeping with the new dignity the temple had acquired, having become a basilica in 1942.
Work on the construction of the bell tower began in 1902, based on a design by Milanese architect Giovanni Ceruti, and concluded in 1904. It was an imposing construction site, involving local artisans and specialised workers. The stylistic choice was Lombard Neo-Gothic, with references to medieval architecture but with a sober and modern imprint. The result was an elegant tower, punctuated by lancet windows and crowned by a pyramidal spire that accentuates its verticality.

Inside, the bell tower houses a concertino of eight bells, which still mark the highlights of the Lecco day today, from liturgical chimes to solemn festivities. The internal stairs – over 380 steps – lead to a panoramic balcony from which one can enjoy one of the most spectacular views of the city and its lake. On clear days, the view can extend to the Retic Alps, the valleys of Valsassina, and down to Brianza.
Beyond its aesthetic and symbolic value, the bell tower is deeply rooted in the identity of the Lecco community. It is a place that unites faith and belonging, often at the centre of religious events and public celebrations. Every year, on the feast day of Saint Nicholas, the city's patron saint, the bell tower is celebrated along with the basilica in a moving ceremony that involves worshippers, citizens, and tourists.
The bell tower of the Basilica of San Nicolò represents much more than an architectural work: it is A cultural and spiritual landmark, a tangible testament to the bond between Lecco and its Christian and maritime tradition. Visiting Lecco and not admiring its bell tower would be like walking past a story without listening to it: every stone, every chime, every view from its summit tells something of the city and of those who have lived it.
Today, thanks to guided tours promoted by local cultural associations, it is possible to access the bell tower and have an experience that is both a vertical journey and a journey through time. A unique opportunity to discover the heart of Lecco from a privileged viewpoint, in silence and light, where faith meets the landscape.
