La Grigna Settentrionale is one of the most enchanting natural jewels of the Lecco mountains, an imposing rocky mass offering diverse landscapes and an infinite network of paths. Its beauty lies precisely in the variety of experiences it offers: from hikes to the summit of the Grignone, to discovering the refuges dotting its slopes, to the breathtaking panoramas that provide views over Lake Como. In this article, we invite you to discover a route that represents one of the most fascinating hikes in the surroundings of Cainallo: the ascent to Porta di Prada and the Bietti-Buzzi Refuge.
The Grigna: a mountainside to experience
Our itinerary comes to life on the western slope of the Grigna, which overlooks Lake Como. The Rifugio Bietti-Buzzi is located in the picturesque Conca del Releccio, in the municipality of Mandello del Lario, and is owned by the CAI Grigne. The starting point, Alpe Cainallo, is instead located on the northern slope of the mountain, in the municipality of Esino Lario. The contrast between the landscapes and views on the two sides of the mountain is part of the charm that makes the hike unique.
Prada's Gate: a natural phenomenon not to be missed
La Porta di Prada is a natural arch sculpted into the limestone rock by the patience of the elements over millennia. This extraordinary geological formation, besides being an attraction for geology and nature enthusiasts, also offers one of the most spectacular views of Grigna. Its panoramic position, with Lake Como stretching out on the horizon, makes this spot a true meeting point for hikers and photographers, who cannot help but capture the beauty of the place.

The Cainallo Path: Our Hike
The path leading from Cainallo to Porta di Prada and the Bietti-Buzzi Refuge is of medium difficulty, but does not present any particular difficulties. It is a fairly easy route, but should not be underestimated, especially in the colder months, when ice can make the path more treacherous. Departure is from the Vo’ di Moncodeno car park (at 1,430 metres above sea level), just after Alpe Cainallo, and the route follows a path that, although with some ups and downs, is generally flat.
The climb towards the Prada Gate
The path initially winds through the woods, with a slight gain in altitude. After about ten minutes of walking, you reach a beautiful scenic spot from which you can admire the north face of the Grignone. Here the path continues with a gentler gradient, but still immersed in wild nature. After about half an hour, you encounter an exposed section, but it is safe thanks to human intervention, which has secured the rock with chains. In winter, however, it is important to exercise particular caution, as ice could make this passage slippery.
We're arriving at Prada Gate
Continuing along the path, we enter a more open area, where the rocks and landscape become harsher. After another easily navigable stretch, the long-awaited moment arrives: the Porta di Prada. After an hour's walk, the natural arch stands before our eyes, with Lake Como sparkling on the horizon, creating an unparalleled scene. The silence of the mountain, broken only by the rustling of the wind, makes this place ideal for a contemplative stop.
The Bietti-Buzzi Hut: final destination
After admiring the Prada Gate, the path continues towards the Bietti-Buzzi Refuge, a refreshment point that is a fundamental stop for anyone wanting to explore this part of the Grigna. Along the way, the view opens up onto slopes that descend towards the Meria valley and the town of Mandello del Lario. After about an hour and a half, we finally reach the Conca del Releccio, at the foot of Sasso Cavallo, where the Refuge welcomes us with its hospitality.
The refuge, which also offers a privileged view of Lake Como, is the ideal place for a regenerating break, perhaps with a hot meal and a breathtaking panoramic view. The majesty of the Cresta di Piancaformia, visible to the left, and the tranquility of the location make this refuge an ideal spot for mountain lovers.
Final considerations
This hike offers a complete experience, from the beauty of the mountain landscapes to the richness of the fauna and flora, not to mention the charm of the mountain huts, which add that typical welcoming touch of the Lecco mountains. Although the route is not particularly difficult, the natural environment of the Grigna is always unpredictable, so it's important to prepare adequately, especially in winter, when trail conditions can change rapidly.
In any case, whether it is a half-day excursion or a short walk, the Porta di Prada and the Bietti-Buzzi Refuge are an invitation to discover one of the most striking areas of the Grigna, one of the mountains that, despite its fame, always manages to surprise with its natural beauty.
