The Manzoniana Walk, a timeless event

Suspended between sky and lake, The Castle of the Unnamed The valley is dominated by the austere grandeur of the rock fortresses that defy time. Perched on the rocky promontory of Tremasasso, in Vercurago, a few kilometres from Lecco, this place is not just a medieval ruin: it is a symbol, a powerful literary reference that is interwoven with collective memory thanks to the pen of Alessandro Manzoni.
Anyone who has read The Betrothed he cannot forget the tormented figure of the Unnamed, the feared and respected lord, whose soul cracks in confrontation with the innocence and faith of Lucia. Well, it is precisely on these cliffs that Manzoni imagined his castle: a solitary fortress, surrounded by woods and silences, from which the Unnamed cast his gaze over a vast and restless territory, like his conscience.
The walls remain, a tower, a chapel dedicated to Saint Jerome Emiliani, and the suggestive peace of a place that invites reflection. But its evocative power has not waned. On the contrary: the ruins, far from being silent, tell a story that goes beyond literature. A story made of medieval sieges, disputes between the Visconti and the Republic of Venice, looting, destruction, and reconstruction. A living story, which can be breathed in while walking among the remains and looking out over the boundless panoramas of Lake Garlate and the Brianza hills.
You can start from the village of Vercurago, following a path that climbs among olive and chestnut trees, or take the more challenging Rotary path, which winds along the slopes of the Monte Magnodeno. At every step, the gaze widens, the breath deepens, and the heart prepares to receive the rough charm of a place that never ceases to question those who venture there.
Along the path, among the trees, one can also glimpse the remains of the so-called Goodnight, perhaps the ancient tavern of Manzoni's "Bravi" gang. Everything here speaks of a distant, yet familiar time, as if the words of the novel had been carved into the stone and the wind.
Once you arrive at the fortress, you find yourself before a place that needs no scenic reconstructions: it is silence itself that tells the story, it is the panorama that suggests what can no longer be seen. And amidst these stones, it is not difficult to imagine Lucia trembling, the Unnamed wrestling with himself, the dawn bursting in like a promise of redemption.
It is a place of the soul, where literature meets reality and where nature amplifies emotion. A place that reminds us how words can make places eternal, and how places can, in turn, give body and life to words.
