Vezio Castle: between history, legends, and unforgettable views over Lake Como
Suspended between sky and lake, nestled like a silent sentinel above Varenna, Vezio Castle It is one of those places where ancient stone tells a story, the landscape enchants, and time seems to slow down. But it's not just documented history that makes this place fascinating: a legend tells that here lived The Lombard queen Theodelinda, who would choose Vezio to retire to in the final years of his life.
Today, of the castle remain the walls, the central tower which can be visited and the remains of ancient warehouses and dwellings, silent witnesses of a past perhaps marked by battles, as suggested by the archaeological finds of weapons and human bones.
Climbing to Vezio Castle is an experience that is satisfying in itself. From Varenna station, you walk for about 40 minutes, passing through the tiny village of Vezio, with its stone houses and slow pace. The path winds between ancient olive trees – here lies one of the northernmost olive groves in Europe – and dry-stone walls, in a landscape that looks like it's come straight out of a postcard from yesteryear.

You can't visit Vezio Castle without climbing to the Lookout tower. From there, you can enjoy one of the lake's most spectacular panoramic viewpoints. But the tower also holds another curiosity: information panels tell the story of Lariosaurus, a prehistoric creature whose fossils were found right in these areas. A little paleontological gem that intrigues adults and children alike.
How to get thereOn foot from Varenna (about a 40-minute uphill walk) or by car to the car park below the village of Vezio.

Castle of Vezio is an ideal destination for families too. Although the climb may require a bit of effort, children will be rewarded by the view, the mysterious atmosphere, and the ghostly statues that stimulate imagination and curiosity. Despite the absence of falconry displays, Vezio Castle remains one of the most fascinating places on Lake Como. For its history, for its position, for that unique blend of art, silence and beauty.
