Towards the Antoinette hut at the Pialeral: a walk through forests, memories and Alpine beauty
of a journalist specialising in mountains and Alpine territories
There is a place at the foot of Grignone where the silence of the woods meets the breath of the mountains, where meadows suddenly open up like green windows among the foliage, and where every step tells a fragment of alpine history: it is the Antonietta Refuge at Pialeral, an ideal destination for hikers, families and lovers of authentic nature.
We are in the heart of Valsassina, in the Balisio area, a historic junction between Ballabio and Pasturo. The hike leading to Pialeral is as balanced as one could wish for: neither too challenging nor too trivial; an accessible route that is nevertheless capable of offering profound insights to those with open eyes and hearts.
Path 31: The Rhythm of the Woods
The departure is set for the Church of the Sacred Heart, a symbolic gateway to the rural and pastoral world of Valsassina. Currently, the church is not directly accessible by car: you walk for about two kilometres along Grassi e Lunghi Street, immersed in an atmosphere that recalls the mountains of yesteryear, made of pastures, silences, and dry-stone walls.
Here begins the Path 31, initially on an agro-silvo-pastoral road that climbs the Homonymous valley, alongside chalets and small agriturismos, a living testament to the age-old relationship between man and the land. It’s an ideal route for children and beginners too, gently introducing them to the pleasures of walking in nature.
After half an hour of gentle ascent, you come across the historic Grigna Lower Traverse. It turns to the right, leaving the road for a path in the woods, narrower but well-maintained, which climbs with a series of regular and never excessive hairpin bends. Birches alternate with fir trees, the ground becomes softer, and in some sections the view opens up to the valley below, with shafts of light filtering through the branches.

All'Alpe Cova: the emotion of the landscape that opens up
After about an hour's walk, you arrive at the’Alpe Cova, one of the most evocative points on the route. Here, between a small alpine lake and a cluster of mountain houses, the landscape transforms. This is the prelude to Pialeral, which is reached in a matter of minutes along the road coming from Pasturo.
The Antonietta al Pialeral Refuge (1,370 m) It is situated in a verdant clearing, nestled between Valsassina and the majestic walls of the Grignone. Its atmosphere is authentic: you can still breathe the air of ancient mountain pastures, listen to the wind whispering through the beams, and savour the silence as if it were an integral part of the landscape. It is the perfect place for a break, a typical lunch, or to lie on the meadows and let yourself be enveloped by nature.
A look beyond: between Grignone and San Calimero
For the more experienced or motivated, the climb towards the starts from here Brioschi Hut at the summit of Grigna Settentrionale. However, even those who are content with Pialeral can enjoy an incomparable view: before them stretches Valsassina, behind them stands the Grignone massif, imposing and fascinating.
is also worth a detour the climb to Little church of San Calimero, its red roof peeking out from the pastures like a signpost for those who love to explore.
Return to the Ring: The Hidden Valley
The descent can be along the same path as the ascent or turn into a Ring road. In this case, you follow the road towards Pasturo, passing by Cold Water Bridge and we arrive at the Chapel of Our Lady Queen of Peace, where a path goes into the woods and returns towards Balisio, running alongside the stream and skirting the location Brunino.
Considerations
The excursion to Rifugio Antonietta at Pialeral represents much more than a simple outing. It is an encounter with the history and morphology of the Grigna, a living lesson in emotional geography, where each turn reveals something more: a memory, a scent, a horizon line.
In an age of haste and overexposure, walking to the Pialeral is a small act of resistance. It is choosing slowness, listening, breathing. It is rediscovering, even if only for a day, the harmony between the pace of man and the rhythm of the mountain.
This is why this path, simple yet rich in meaning, deserves a full place in the repertoire of those who truly want to get to know the Lecco mountains. You don't need to reach the summit to be moved: sometimes all it takes is to walk, with an open heart.
